At Designer Kitchens, one of our favorite parts of the kitchen remodel design process is helping Colorado Springs homeowners with choosing the perfect backsplash. Along with top-of-the-line kitchen appliances, a well-chosen and beautiful backsplash can add the finishing touch that brings the whole project together. This month, we are sharing some of our favorite options for backsplashes.

What is a Kitchen Backsplash?

A kitchen backsplash is the wall space behind the kitchen sink, countertop food prep areas, and the stove that protects the wall from splashes. The backsplash often spans the space from the kitchen countertop to the bottom of the kitchen cabinets.

Backsplashes and Kitchen Design

The design, materials, and color of your kitchen backsplash design can bring continuity to the theme of a kitchen remodel. Whether you're aiming for a Colorado rustic, country, or modern feel, choosing the perfect backsplash matters as much as selecting the perfect custom kitchen cabinets. A backsplash is the finishing touch of the perfect kitchen design that pops.

Kitchen backsplash designs can be minimal or dominate the walls of the main kitchen prep areas. Whichever fits your style, there are two factors to consider when choosing the right backsplash design for your remodel.

Two Key Considerations When Choosing The Perfect Backsplash

There are two key factors to keep in mind when choosing the perfect backsplash for your kitchen. First, the backsplash must be functional for you and your lifestyle. For most busy homeowners in Colorado, that means the material must be easy-to-clean and resistant to staining from food, liquids in various forms, grease, heat and even fire.

An easy-to-clean kitchen backsplash that spans the space from the counter to the cabinets makes keeping your kitchen clean and tidy easier

The second key factor to consider when choosing the perfect backsplash is the aesthetic appeal. The material, pattern and color must look great in your kitchen. Fortunately, many options are available to homeowners who want to make the backsplash a focal point in their kitchen.

Kitchen Backsplash Design and Materials

In the past, choosing the perfect backsplash was easy because of the distinct lack of available options. The color of ceramic tile and grout was about all there was to choose from.

However, in recent years alternative backsplash materials have grown in popularity as Colorado homeowners use their kitchens for self-expression and to stand out from the crowd. Porcelain, natural stone, bronze and stainless steel are currently popular materials for kitchen backsplash design.

Passionate home cooks may want to avoid heavily textured tiles, such as rough or stacked tiles. Grease can find crevices, increasing the time and effort to clean.

Let's look at some popular kitchen backsplash materials and designs for Colorado Springs homes.

Subway Tiles

Subway tiles are affordable for Southern Colorado homeowners choosing the perfect backsplash at the right price. Because of the simplicity and unassuming material and design options, these three-inch by six-inch tiles can enhance a kitchen remodel regardless of the decor theme. Subway tiles boast a wide variety of colors and textures that can tie together subtle color accents and showcase the important details of your kitchen.

Herringbone Tiles

Herringbone tiles are long, rectangular pieces of ceramic time that meet in a zigzag pattern. These tiles have become synonymous with country kitchens. Dark grout is a perfect addition to the herringbone for a more distinctive flair with your country kitchen remodel. Replacing standard light grout with darker hues will make your white tiles stand out and allow the farmhouse feel to shine.

Provincial Tiles

When incorporating provincial tiles, choosing the perfect backsplash for kitchen remodels with the European or French farmhouse theme is easy. Ceramic or porcelain provincial tiles typically display a European pattern or design, such as the fleur-de-lis. These tiles will bring an "old-world" feel to your kitchen.

Provencal tiles, especially when paired with 2023's most popular countertop options, can provide coziness and warmth and are great for the kitchens of passionate chefs and bakers.

Penny Tiles

Are you going for a retro yet classy look? A kitchen backsplash design using penny tiles can ensure your kitchen has a luxe, exquisite aesthetic. A staple of backsplash design a century ago, the penny tile has made a massive comeback in the past decade. This round tile is similar to the hexagon tile, is about the size of a penny (thus the name), and can make small kitchens appear larger. The penny tile adds to both modern and retro kitchen design.

Granite Backsplashes

As one of Colorado Springs's top-rated local kitchen designers, we understand why many of our clients explore granite backsplashes. Not only do they fit the first of our two considerations above (functionality), but they also can be cut from the same slab as their granite countertop. Granite backsplashes are seamless and are popular for contemporary kitchens, where a clean and uninterrupted look is best.

Natural Stone or Soapstone

Natural stone or soapstone has proven to be a popular choice for a kitchen backsplash that offers water, grease and fire resistance. However, some Colorado homeowners choosing the perfect backsplash shy away from natural and soapstone. Because the tiles are porous, they do require sealing to prevent staining over time.
